| BACKGROUND So once upon a time when Zoro was a kid training at this dinky dojo thing in this section of the One Piece world known as the East Blue (sea). And at this dinky dojo place was his sensei and his sensei’s daughter, Kuina. Now, midget-child Zoro was the best swordsman in the dojo other than Kuina. Never once did he win a fight against her. Naturally, this brought about a very competitive relationship between the two midget-children. One night, Zoro challenges Kuina to a fight and, not to anyone surprise, Kuina wins. Zoro throws a hissyfit and Kuina just kind of ignores him because she’s chill. Instead, she tells him that she’s jealous of him because he’ll actually become a great swordsman because he’s a guy and she’s destined to always being second-rate. Zoro does not understand this because he’s an idiot so somehow they end up promising each other that they’ll both train hard to become the strongest swordsmen they can. Unfortunately, the next day or something Kuina dies and Zoro is crushed forever.
Fast forward to when Zoro’s like… 18 or 19 or something. Now he’s an infamous pirate hunter in the East Blue and champion of the “three sword style” which is the most ridiculous thing ever since you have to hold two swords in your two individual hands, and then one in your mouth. Clearly this is a shonen manga. Anyway, Zoro’s infamous and wanted by the Marines, who are kind of like this… really big and expansive version of the police. They’re the ones that keep the peace in the One Piece World, hand out bounties to pirates, and basically just hunt down outlaws. Well, Zoro’s an outlaw because somehow being a pirate hunter makes you a criminal. So the first time we see Zoro in One Piece is when he’s tied to this… cross thing (but not like Jesus). He’s been caught by the marines because he tried to rescue this little girl from the local Lieutenant’s jerky son. The son’s name is Helmeppoi and the jerky Lieutenant’s name is Morgan. Anyway, Helmeppo has Zoro tied to this cross thing in the middle of this empty yard and is planning on killing him that way. And everything would have been just as planned but then this aspiring pirate captain named Luffy and his little runt-friend-who-wants-to-be-a-marine named Coby come and talk to him. Luffy pretty much goes up to him and demands that he become part of his crew (which, at this point, only has Luffy in it). Zoro’s like “you are an idiot no” and Luffy responds with the clever “I’LL GET YOUR SWORDS BACK IF YOU JOIN ME” and Zoro’s like “that’s ridiculous”. And then Hellmeppo comes in and is all gloating and shit and promises Zoro if he lasts a certain amount of time without food and water, he’ll let Zoro go. Zoro’s like “sweet” and Luffy hightails it out of there only to find out later that Helmeppo has absolutely does not mean what he told Zoro. Yeah, he’s going to kill him anyway. So Luffy calls bullshit and goes to get Zoro’s swords back from Lieutenant Morgan, who has them. He brings them back to Zoro, but he also brings back an angry Morgan and Helmeppo and a ton of Marine lackies. Well, once Zoro’s free and has his swords, he defeats them no prob and becomes Luffy’s first crew member, meaning he’s pretty much Luffy’s first mate.
A quick note about Luffy: He has special powers granted to him by eating a certain type of fruit called a “devil fruit”. When a devil fruit is eaten, the person who ate it gains an extraordinary power but also loses the ability to swim or just be… competent when in water. Well, Luffy ate one before meeting Zoro and was granted the power of becoming a “rubber man”, meaning he can pretty much turn any part of his body into rubber. Also: in the future, when I say that someone has “powers”, assume that they too have eaten a devil fruit that granted them that power.
Now, Luffy’s all pumped up to be a pirate mainly due to the fact that it’s an awesome adventure but also due to the fact that he, like many other aspiring pirates were inspired by an infamous/famous dead pirate named Gold Roger/Gol D. Roger, who was the captain of the Jolly Roget Pirates like 20 years ago or something. Anyway, he sailed around the world and did all this shit and collected all this treasure and stored it at the last island on this stretch of ocean called The Grand Line. This long stretch of ocean pretty much wraps around the world and divides the other oceans into North Blue, South Blue, West Blue, and East Blue. Now Luffy and Zoro are both from East Blue, which is considered to be the weakest of the four seas, but whatever. Anyway, that’s a brief history/synopsis of the One Piece world.
NOW BACK TO THE STORY. Alright so Zoro and Luffy are in a boat like T-Pain or whatever. Luffy and Zoro have been on this boat drifting because both of them suck at directions so they’re fucking hungry as shit. So Luffy sees this big fat bird thing flying overhead and uses his rubber powers to try and kill it for dinner. Well, he fails and the bird kind of kidnaps him to this new town called something or other where this pirate captain and his crew have pretty much taken over a whole town. The Pirate captain’s name is Buggy the Clown and he is a fucking idiot. Anyway, Luffy’s been kidnapped by this giant bird and Zoro follows him even though he’s still recuperating from being starved for like 2 weeks or something. Or maybe he’s recuperating later. Whatever Zoro’s always recuperating from something goddamn. Anyway Zoro follows him to this island where the two of them meet this chick named Nami who steals from pirates and grrr she hates pirates a lot but she’s a good navigator so obviously Luffy wants her. The only thing is that Luffy gets captured by Buggy and put in a cage so Nami winds up there somehow with Buggy’s map of GRAND LINE/EAST BLUE (CHECK). Yeah she stole it from him so Buggy’s pissed. This is where Zoro comes in and rescues his captain but he also gets stabbed in the side by Buggy because Buggy’s a sneaky bastard and has the power to pretty much divide up his body parts and have them float at people. Anyway, Zoro gets stabbed but still manages to carry Luffy’s whole fucking cage down a roof and onto a street where they meet the mayor of the town and this angry dog that hates Luffy. Oh and Nami follows them. Anyway, Zoro kind of collapses there because he’s been carrying a fucking cage and is bleeding really badly and the mayor puts him in a house to rest. Everything seems pretty chill for a few minutes before Buggy’s crewmembers are out looking for them. One of them knocks the building Zoro was resting in down and somehow he survives that and picks a fight with the other minion, Cabaji the Acrobat. The fight’s pretty short, but Zoro manages to get an even worse injury because Cabaji’s a douche and kept attacking Zoro’s wound. But Zoro wins so it’s all cool.
Anyway, after Zoro’s fight some stuff happens that Zoro’s not really involved in and then Luffy fights Buggy and wins and they get Nami the Navigator on their team.
They sail off and land at this new island called whatever, which is inhabited by this weirdo long-nosed lying kid named Usopp and his wannabe-girlfriend Kaya who’s crippled and shit and her butlers Kuro and Merry. When the Strawhats (their new Pirate Crew name thing) finally land on the island, they get spotted by Usopp and his “crew” of “pirates” (i.e. 3 local kids who think Usopp is awesome!). Usopp and friends go to confront them and try to chase them away from the island, thinking that they’re bad pirates since… most pirates are. Anyway they get that misunderstanding cleared up pretty quickly and soon meet Usopp’s girlfriend-except-not-really, Kaya. Kaya is a rich, sickly girl and has been friends with Usopp since… sometime. Anyway, Zoro doesn’t really do anything during all of this. In fact he doesn’t really do anything until the Strawhats (and Usopp) figure out that one of Kaya’s butlers is EEEEEVIL and used to be a pirate captain. He’s been spending like the past 3 years or something to get close to Kaya so that his ex-pirate crew can kill her and have her sign a will that grants him all the money she has. He calls his ex-pirate crew which is now led by an idiot hypnotist named Jango. Anyway, Zoro, Luffy and Nami but mostly Luffy and Zoro block the pirates’ way into the village. Except Luffy knocks himself out pretty quickly by getting hynoptized by Jango and… yeah. He knocks himself out. So basically Zoro’s the only one left between the pirates and the little village where Kaya and Usopp live. So Jango calls out some crewmates of his called the Meowban brothers (individually their names are Buchi and Sham). They fight Zoro and the fight’s kind of difficult because at first they steal one of Zoro’s swords, then when he gets it back and defeats one the other gets all buff and beats him up. But Zoro beats them both. And then Kuro comes and Nami wakes Luffy up to deal with him while Jango chases after Kaya. Zoro takes Usopp to defeat Jango and save Kaya and when they get back from beating Jango Luffy’s defeated Kuro and everything’s happy again.
So the day’s saved and everything and Kaya gives the Strawhats a ship of their very own as thanks. The ship is named the Going Merry and the crew steal Usopp away as their sniper. On their way to the next island they run into two of Zoro’s friends who are losers. They are bounty hunters like Zoro used to be and, as they proclaim “trained under him” or something. Anyways, their names are Johnny and Yusaku and they tell the crew about this awesome badass floating restaurant ship called the Baratie where the crew could possibly recruit a chef. So the Strawhats are like “cool, that’s chill lets go” so they sail off to this Baratie place.
They get there and Zoro basically does nothing except give inspirational speeches to everyone in the general vicinity including Sanji and then Mihawk comes and shit gets real. Zoro challenges Mihawk who is the best swordfighter in the world to a duel and gets his ass whooped but still manages to impress Mihawk enough that he doesn't kill him. Mihawk tells Zoro to become stronger and challenge him again, then Zoro promises Luffy he won't ever lose to anyone again and that he'll definitely defeat Mihawk someday. Then Usopp and Zoro's two buddies take Zoro's beat up body and sail off after the Going Merry while Luffy and Sanji do shit. Presumably at the same time or around the same time, Usopp and Zoro and those other two guys arrive at Arlong Park which is where Nami took the Going Merry to. Zoro ends up getting tied to the ship by Usopp so he doesn't end up killing Nami or something. Except Usopp messes up and Zoro and their mini-boat get captured. Zoro is brought in front of Arlong and Zoro learns that Nami works under the fish-pirate and that he's just one of her "victims". He doesn't really believe that she thinks that and tests his theory by throwing himself into a pool while his arms and legs are bound. Nami saves the idiot and Zoro's all "HEH. I KNEW YOU CARED." and then Nami punches him. Arlong then leaves to go hunt down Usopp and takes his fish troops with him. The ones he leaves behind with Zoro promptly get beaten up while the rest of the pirates are away. After beating everyone up, Zoro decides to go save Usopp from Arlong and hitches a ride back to the village. When he arrives, he finds that Usopp has already been captured by Arlong and that he has to go all the way back to Arlong headquarters. Which he does.
And then he gets run over by Luffy and Sanji in a ship. They all reunite, talk about how to save Nami from Arlong, and then stuff happens and they finally decide to lead an attack on Arlong's fortress. Except the fight gets messed up because Luffy's an idiot so Zoro has to fight his squid-man opponent in a time limit so he can save Luffy from drowning. Of course the fight also sucks because Zoro's fighting with his really bad would-kill-a-normal-person wounds from Mihawk. So yeah, the fight sucks (for Zoro) but in the end he ends up winning and the whole crew ends up winning against Arlong and Nami rejoins and everything is wonderful.
So then they go to Logue Town, which is this town just outside of the Grand Line and Zoro goes out to buy some replacement swords since Mihawk shattered two of them. He meets up with MARINE CHICK THAT LOOKS LIKE KUINA--TASHIGI (that's her name) and she basically shows him all the good stores to buy in the shop. Including a cursed one that like Zoro because it didn't cut off his arm. ANYWAY. (CHAPTER 97)
So once everyone's done shopping they all meet up in the execution plaza WHERE LO AND BEHOLD LUFFY HAS GOTTEN INTO MORE TROUBLE turns out Buggy and Albida-who-is-not-covered-here have hunted Luffy down and now plan to kill him at the same place that THAT FAMOUS PIRATE WAS KILLED AT. So obviously, his crew has to save him. Luckily! A storm happens and a lightning bolt comes down and conveniently zaps Buggy and destroys the execution tower. Luffy is free! They spend the rest of the time running out of Logue Town being chased by Marines, including Tashigi! In fact he actually fights Tashigi and defeats her but doesn't kill her. She asks why and Zoro goes stupid on her. Literally. He breaks out his stupid logic on her. This really isn't an important detail but I love it so whatever.
So they all make it back to the ship and set off to the Grand Line.
Sucks that their first obstacle is the entrance to the Grand Line itself. Which is a mountain. And if you forgot, they're on a boat. And boats can't really go up mountains. BUT THIS IS A SHONEN MANGA SO THEY FIND A WAY. And that way is to go up a stream thing that somehow goes up the mountain. And it'd all be smooth sailing if Luffy didn't break the goddamn rudder. But he does, so things get difficult. AGAIN. But like always, things get better. AGAIN.
Until things get worse, that is. On their way down they meet a giant fucking whale. Like. Moby Dick if Moby Dick was black and adorable instead of white and bloodthirsty. The problem with said whale is that it is blocking their way. They do their best to not crash into the whale, but that's ruined when Luffy punches it in the eye and it swallows them.
But then it gets trippy. See, inside the whale's stomach is this ocean paradise. With giant squids and shit. But still. There's an old man that lives inside the whale's stomach and basically tells the crew "Guess what. The whale is sad and hits his head against a wall waiting for its friends to come back." So Luffy and the gange spend a bit of time cheering the whale up and it is probably the sweetest and most heartbreaking story in One Piece ever.
So they go off on their journey and bring these two weirdoes along named Ms. Wednesday and Mr. Nine. While sailing Zoro talks to them saying that their names sounded "familiar" to him, but any further explanation is cut short by Nami.
And shortly after that they arrive at the first island on the Grand Line, Whisky Peak. Turns out Whisky Peak is a "Welcome Town" where pirates are the heroes and the strawhats' arrival is celebrated with lots of partying and drinking. BUT IT'S ALL A RUSE. Turns out the island's really run by this organization called Baroque which kills the pirates that enter and stay at their island. The partying and drinking were all just ways to distract and knock out the strawhats. AND IT WOULD HAVE WORKED TOO if Baroque hadn't invited Zoro into the organization a few months earlier. So he knows about all these agents and their weird codenames and basically defeats 100 of them singlehandedly in one night. Shit was badass.
And it wasn't just a random fight scene! Turns out one of the Baroque members Zoro faced, Ms. Wednesday, is actually the princess of some desert nation called Alabasta! Apparently Princess Vivi was undercover along with two of her guards. Two higher, more powerful agents (named Mr. Five and Ms. Valentine) from Baroque come to kill the undercover princess + guards due to the fact that they know the identity of "the boss". One of the guards hires Zoro and the rest of the gang to protect the princess and escort her safely back to Alabasta. The job is accepted and off they go! Oh yeah and Vivi accidentally tells the strawhat pirates who "the boss" is so they're getting hunted now too.
On their way out of Whisky Peak they run into Ms. All Sunday/Nico Robin for the first time. They talk, Zoro is suspicious, Robin gives them stuff that Luffy breaks, then she leaves and they continue on to their adventure to Alabasta.
The next island they stop at is called Little Garden which is a tropical forest island with dinosaurs and giants. The team splits up when they arrive, Luffy and Vivi go exploring and meet Dori the giant, Nami and Usopp stay on the ship and meet the giant Broki and Sanji and Zoro go hunting. Unfortunately, Mr. Five and Ms. Valentine are on the island with them, along with two other Baroque Agents (Ms. Golden Week and Mr. Three) with the goal to kill the strawhat pirates and Bebe. Zoro's the first one to be captured by Mr. Three, lured in by an imposter-nami and captured like that. Nami and Bebe also get captured by Mr. Three, who has the power to make candles out of anything by… covering them in whatever thing candles are made from. So. He makes them a giant… birthday cake candle thing and puts them on there as candles. And yeah. It's weird. The main thing that happens here for Zoro is that he tries to cut off his legs in order to free himself from the candle set thing. It… doesn't really work. Anyway, eventually Luffy and Usopp save them by burning the wax off of them and Zoro kills/knocks out Mr. 5 while Nami and Vivi take out Ms. Valentine. Luffy takes out Mr. 3 and Vivi's pet duck-thing takes out Ms. Golden Week. Everything ends happily and they sail off to another island.
So they’re sailing to Alabasta and shit and then all of a sudden Nami gets a high fever and they’re like WELP. DETOUR TIME. So they look for an island where they can find a doctor for Nami and while looking Zoro finds a person walking on water. Turns out it’s a pirate ship that tries to take them over but they fail because Zoro and the gang are kickass. So they continue on their way until they run into this wintery island called Drum Island. And UNLUCKILY FOR THEM EVERYONE HATES THEM. So much so that they even shoot Vivi! Hurray, travel! BUT! Luffy and Vivi convince the villagers to get them a doctor and they get led to the village doctor who is also a witch! Named Kureha! But Zoro’s not there for that because they ask him to stay and guard the ship. So he does. Like a good Zoro. AND THAT’S ALL HE DOES DURING THIS ARC ASK TOBYFFS TO CHECK. When the leave the island they gain Chopper, an adorable reindeer thing that becomes the ship’s doctor. They set out for Alabasta finally after this.
When the gang finally arrives in Alabasta they land in this port town thing called Nanohana. Luffy runs off on his own and the rest of the crew goes off to eat. Unfortunately, Luffy attracts attention from the Marines and runs away, eventually running into Zoro and the gang and leading the Marines to them. LUCKILY! They’re saved by Luffy’s brother, Ace who is also a pirate! Ace distracts the marines so that Luffy and the crew can set sail for another part of Alabasta, then catches up with them once he’s done. He does things with Luffy and then leaves. And the gang continues on its way.
The gang’s next destination is in the Alabastian desert where the leaders of the Alabastian Rebellion forces are. DID I MENTION THAT ALABASTA IS IN THE MIDDLE OF A CIVIL WAR CAUSED BY BAROQUE WORKS? OOPS. WELL. NOW I DID. So yeah, they’re going to the rebel’s camp to figure out just what has been going down. When they finally get to Yuba (the rebel camp) they find that’s its being attacked by a giant sandstorm! They run over to the town and see it’s in shambles and dried out. The only guy there is a guy named Toto who tells them the rebels relocated to an oasis near Nanohana. He also recognizes Vivi, which triggers a flashback where we find out that Vivi’s best friend from childhood, Kohza, is the leader of the rebellion. None of this really has to do with Zoro.
Oh! Except for the fact that Vivi tells Toto that she and the others by extension will stop the rebellion. But Luffy doesn’t want to stop the rebellion. He wants to go stop Mr. Zero, the boss of Baroque who is not-so-secretly Crocodile, an ex-pirate who now helps the Marines (this type of pirate is known as a Shichibukai!). Vivi agrees and so the gang heads off to stop Crocodile at his casino in a town called Rainbase. When they make it to Rainbase Luffy and Usopp attract the Marines attention and a chase scene ensues. The group splits up in order to lose the Marines and planning to meet up at Crocodile’s casino. Zoro and Vivi split up together and Zoro lets Vivi run ahead while he stops the Marines. Unfortunately, Zoro meets up with Tashigi again and refuses to fight her because she reminds him so much of Kuina.
When they all meet up at the casino they manage to fall into a trap set up by Crocodile because Luffy and Usopp are idiots. Zoro, Luffy, Usopp, Nami and a Marine named Smoker (the head of the marines that’s been chasing them whenever he can) are trapped inside a cage inside Crocodile’s hideout. Crocodile himself is sitting at a table right outside of the cage, waiting for Vivi to come. She does, he unveils his big plan: Having one of his agents, Mr. 2 (a man who can take the form and voice and everything of a person he’s touched) impersonate the king, Vivi’s father, and instigate the Rebellion to attack Alubarna, the capital of Alabasta. The rebels do, and the king’s guards respond in kind, both fighting to “protect” Alabasta. Crocodile tells him all this like a good evil villain should. He then offers the key to the cage to Vivi, only to “accidentally” drop it into a Bananadile (Huge-ass crocodiles with Bananas on their heads) who then eat it. Then Crocodile leaves and is all “OH BY THE WAY this chamber will be completely flooded in an hour HAVE FUN.” AND JUST TO BE A COMPLETE DICK he lets all the Bananadiles into the room to fight Vivi. Luckily Sanji/”Mr. Prince” comes and saves the day!
So they escape and meet up with Chopper who has a giant crab for them to ride to Alubarna on! So they all get on and then Luffy gets kidnapped by Crocodile and everyone is like “NOOOOOOOOOOO” but they keep going to Alubarna anyway. When they finally get close to Alubarna, they split up into separate groups of two in order to fool the remaining Baroque Works agents waiting to stop them. While the Baroque agents chase after the groups of two, Vivi sneaks past and does her ‘stopping the war’ thing.
For the sake of this app and the fact that at the moment it’s already five pages long, I’ll just stick to Zoro’s team, and more specifically, his fight with Mr. 1 who can turn any part of his body into blades. Obviously, it’s Zoro’s fight. This fight reveals a shitton of things. 1) Zoro’s connection to Baroque Works. Apparently, years ago, Mr. 7 approached Zoro to join Baroque Works. Zoro declined the invitation because they wouldn’t let him be the boss. Then he killed Mr. 7. GOOD JOB. 2) Zoro learns how to cut through metal. Why does he learn this? Because he won’t be able to defeat Mr. 1 without that ability, since you know. The whole ‘making his body out of blades’ thing. So. Zoro has to learn how to cut through metal to defeat him. How does he do this? Well. It takes a while. For the most part, they’re evenly matched. That is. Until the guy makes a building collapse on Zoro. So what does Zoro do? Well, first of all he almost dies, but that’s normal. Secondly, he has a flashback to something his sensei once told him. Somehow, this motivates him to get back up, while lifting the building that collapsed on top of him. He then proceeds to use the ‘sword that cannot cut through anything’ to cut through metal. Well. That doesn’t really work and he seriously is on the brink of death this time. Good thing that turns out to help him! It helps him hear how things ‘breathe’ and shit like that. AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW. IT WORKS! And now Zoro can cut through metal.
After that more stuff happens that doesn’t involve Zoro and then the war ends. Everyone’s happy and Alabasta is stabilized! The Strawhats have done their job, so they head off after a few complications not important enough to be included. THIS IS ONLY THE FIRST MAJOR ARC I’M TRYING TO SAVE YOU GUYS.
The next thing that happens is that Ms. All Sunday/Nico Robin joins their crew. The rest of the crew overcomes their initial suspicion of her fairly quickly, but Zoro remains suspicious. Then a ship falls out of the sky and the gang discover that their next stop is apparently a sky island called Skypeia or it would be if they knew how to get there. So instead, they decide to go to another island called Jaya to ask for directions.
Turns out Jaya is a Pirate Resort town called Mocktown where a pirate named Bellamy is (along with his crew). Nami, Zoro and Luffy go out to explore while the rest stay on the ship. Somehow, they manage to attract the attention of Bellamy who finds Luffy and pretty much beats him up, but not because he’s tough. Just because Luffy and Zorro refuse to fight back. They leave Mocktown and go to the other side of Jaya, where there is apparently a person who knows about the Sky Island. So they go to this guy, [INSERT GUY’S NAME HERE] and he tells them how to get to Skypeia and fixes their ship up for them but tells them they need to find a bird in order to get to Skypeia. So the gang split up into groups to find the bird and Zoro is paired with Robin. The whole time he’s pretty much GRRRR I DON’T TRUST YOU WOMAN but ends up following her anyway because she actually… has a sense of direction. Robin ends up getting it and they head back to that guy’s place only to find that Bellamy and his crew have already hurt/killed/nearly killed the guy. Luffy rushes off to defeat them before dawn, which is when the crew heads off to the sky island.
They set off for the Sky Island when Luffy comes back. In order to get there they have to ride a sea current up into the sky look I don’t know just accept it. Anyway, before they ride this current this ship comes and is like “HEY LUFFY AND ZORO YOUR BOUNTIES GOT LARGER”, Luffy’s bounty is now 100 million and Zoro’s is 60 million. Zoro isn’t satisfied. So then they ride this upward current and THEN THE SKYPEIA ARC STARTS.
When they reach the shores of Skypeia they meet an angel girl named Gonis. Shortly after they meet her father, Pajaya. After awhile, Skypeia’s police force the White Berets attack them. The gang defeat them easily, and are raised to “Level 2” criminals, which means that they’ll have to be dealt with by the priests of the god Eneru. So then Zoro, Nami, Chopper, and Robin are kidnapped in the ship TO THE SACRIFICIAL BEACH! WOOHOO!
The next time we see Zoro he has gotten sexy goggles and is fighting a shark. Because that’s how badasses roll. After he’s beaten up all the sharks around the altar, he ditches the gang but Nami and Robin still tag along. Together the three of them go to explore the forest because obviously that’s smart. In their travels they discover that the island they’re on was the second half of Jaya. So they end up all meeting up again, only to split into two other groups. Zoro goes into the group with Robin, Luffy and Chopper. On the second day of their exploration, they run into a giant poisonous snake, which then splits them all up. Which means Zoro gets lost again. Zoro’s first battle is against a Cyandian, which are like… Skypeia’s version of indians. The Cyandian’s name is Braham, and Zoro defeats him with relative ease. After that, he somehow ends up hitching a ride on that giant bird they had to find in order to get to Skypeia. Unfortunately, the bird lets go of Zoro while in flight, in order to distract a giant snake. Luckily, he lands in the ruins of Jaya where he was initially supposed to go! Unluckily, there are all of the superstrong opponents already there. Zoro gets attacked by all of them, but his primary opponent is one of Enel’s priests, Oumu. He gets injured early on in the fight by a trap Oumu sets, and continues to get injured by the priest’s whip-blade.
Then Oumu sets up a barbed wire cage around them. Because he’s a dick. Then Enel pops in to say ‘hi’ and by ‘pops in’ I mean, electrocutes the “demon warrior” Cyandian Waipa’s girlfriend outside of the cage. It’s important because it’s the first time Zoro sees Enel. Shhh. Anyway, back to the fight. It’s a hard fight, since Oumu can sense Zoro’s ‘mantra’ which I’m assuming is like sensing someone’s presence. Anyway, it sucks for Zoro since you know. The guy knows where he is no matter where he tries to go. Eventually, he manages to strike the guy and defeat him. Through a wall. Then Enel shatters the platform thing their on and brings them down to where he is and is all “WELCOME WARRIORS WHO SURVIVED YOU GUYS GET TO SURVIVE WITH ME.” Then Robin is like “ARGUMENT” and Enel electrocutes her. Zoro catches her as she falls, then turns and attempts to attack Enel. He gets electrocuted and foot-stomped by Enel until Waipa grabs onto the fake-god and cancels out his powers. Zoro gets free. Waipa then attacks Enel, injuring himself in the process. Too bad the attack doesn’t work. Enel gets back up and electrocutes Waipa with 30,000 watts of electricity. Then he attacks Zoro with the same amount. BAM. ZORO’S KNOCKED OUT FOR THE REST OF THE ARC.
Wait no I lied. He wakes up while Luffy is battling Enel and has to cut down this giant beanstalk and make it fall westward so Luffy can get to Enel’s ship thing. Unfortunately, he only chops one half of the stalk before getting electrocuted AGAIN by Enel. And that’s all he does in Skypiea. SO. MOVING ON.
They exit Skypeia and land in the sea. They decide that the next crew member to join will be a ship repairman. BUT THAT WON’T HAPPEN FOR AWHILE. Instead, they stop at an island called Long Island which is not in New York but instead is an island where everything is long! It’s here that they run into the Foxy Pirates who challenge the Strawhats to a Davy Back fight, which is like a tournament of silly games where the losing team gets a crew member taken away. FOREVAH. So, Zoro and Sanji are paired up on a team and are forced to play a… bizarre ball game. Which ends rather violently because the other team cheats and uses weapons. BUT SANJI AND ZORO USE ~*TEAMWORK*~ TO DEFEAT THEM AND THEY WIN THE FIGHT! HUZZAH! And that’s all Zoro does for this part because after him Luffy fights the boss and wins and yaaaay.
OKAY MOVING ON. After they defeat the Foxy Pirates they run into the Marine General Aokiji, who has and still is chasing after Robin. But then he decides to kill not just Robin, but all of the Strawhats! Including Luffy! Which Zoro obviously has a problem with. ANYWAY, Robin attacks Aokigi first, but then Zoro goes to defend her when he attempts to retaliate against her. Except then he freezes Zoro’s arm so Zoro rolls around on the ground like a turtle. And then Aokigi hug-freezes Robin. And then the Strawhats and Aokigi start to play football with Frozen Robin in the sense that… they’re passing her off to each other in an attempt to get her away from Aokigi. So Zoro, Nami, and Sanji go back to the ship and are like HEAL US CHOPPER and Chopper’s like “hokay”. Then Zoro and Sanji run back to where Luffy is and find him frozen by Aokiji who has since left. They bring him back to the ship to thaw and everything’s happy again.
So they leave Long Island and sail on their merry way until they spot a frog that can swim freestyle (Leah claims this is herself. I did not argue). They follow the frog because Luffy wants to until they come to a lighthouse and almost get mowed over by a sea-train. The sea-train hits the frog, stops and out comes this really ugly old lady, a little girl, and a “cat” (which is actually a rabbit). The girl is named Chimnie, the “cat” Gonbe, and the ugly grandma lady is named Kokoro (Kokoro is Chimnie’s grandma). Also the frog’s name is apparently Yokojina, not Leah. ANYWAYS Kokoro gives the guys a map of the next island, Water 7, and a letter of recommendation for a ship mechanic there. Then they leave and head for Water 7, the city of water and ship mechanics.
So they arrive in Water 7 and frolick around doing shit. Zoro stays on the ship and sleeps while everyone frolicks. Strangely enough, the ship actually gets attacked while everyone is away and Zoro is left to defend the ship by himself! He defeats them pretty easily. The next person who comes on the ship is a mechanic from Water 7’s best shipyard who happens to look pretty similar to Usopp. His name is Kaku. Kaku leaves after a brief discussion with Zoro in which Kaku tells Zoro what he tells Luffy later: That they need a new ship. DUNDUNDUUUUUN. Oh, also: Robin is missing. FUN TIMES. Also also: Usopp gets kidnapped and mugged for the 200 million beri (dollars in One Piece land) that he was carrying. His muggers were a group called the “Frankie Family”. Zoro, Sanji and Chopper set out to get the money back from them. Usopp’s already on his way there in order to REDEEM HIMSELF.
Except when they find Usopp, they find him knocked out and beat up WHICH MEANS WAR. Oh and Luffy’s with them now too. ANYWAY. WAR. AGAINST THE FRANKIE FAMILY. So they beat up the Frankie family and wreck their base, only to find that the money isn’t there and neither is the head of the family, Frankie. Zoro and Sanji discuss what to do while Chopper heals Usopp and Luffy decides that it’s time for a new ship. So then Usopp and Luffy have this heartbreaking fight because Usopp doesn’t want to change ships and Luffy does so Usopp challenges Luffy to a duel. The winner decides what happens to the ship. OF COURSE LUFFY WINS but the fight is heartbreaking and I didn’t even read it because Zoro just stared the whole time BUT JUST LOOKING AT IT MADE ME TEAR UP. ANYWAY. UM. Yeah the fight ends and Zoro showers some tough love on Luffy and everyone. Like always.
So Luffy gives the old ship to Usopp and takes the rest of the gang to a hotel thing while they wait for their new ship to be built. Basically, Usopp’s been kicked out. And soon after, Iceberg, the mayor and owner of the top shipyard ever is shot. FUN TIMES. Turns out Nico Robin was “the killer” (SPOILER: SHE WAS FORCED TO DO IT) and now the Straw Hats are wanted for an attempt on Iceberg’s life. Even though they didn’t do it. But it sucks for the gang because now they’re all being chased. Including Zoro. Awhile late he runs into Nami and Luffy and runs with them. Then Chopper finds them and tells them that he and Sanji saw and talked with Robin and that she’s not coming back to the crew. She also hints that she, or whoever she’s associated with, is going to attack Iceberg again that night and attempt to successfully assassinate him. The Straw Hats decide to go to the scene of the crime to stop it. And save Robin. So eventually Luffy, Chopper, Nami and Zoro meet up in Iceberg’s room where the Marine’s toptoptop secret secret service, CP9, have revealed themselves to be the ship carpenters that worked directly under Iceberg. And Robin is with them! And they want this ancient blueprint of a huge ass weapon that Iceberg supposedly owns but not really because he gave it to that Franky guy. BUT THE STRAW HATS DON’T KNOW THAT YET. They just burst in all ready to fight and shit.
And get defeated pretty easily. In fact, the CP9 agents actually send both Luffy and Zoro flying across the city. Zoro gets stuck in a chimney. It’s amazing. Eventually, Choper finds Zoro while Nami finds Luffy and they chase after Nico Robin, Sanji, Franky, and Usopp who are on the Sea Train headed towards Enies Lobby, the Marine headquarters which houses the… Marine Headquarters and Impel Down, an inescapable prison for criminals (pirates). Kokoro finds them and gives them access to another sea train called Rocket Man so that they can chase after Robin. Unfortunately, the Rocket Man was a prototype and doesn’t have the capability to stop or slow down. They decide to go anyway. Before they’re about to leave, Franky’s family comes and begs Luffy to let them come with the Straw Hats so that they can save Franky. Luffy accepts. Three non-CP9 carpenters accompany them too, in order to avenge Iceberg. All three groups decide to work together to defeat the CP9. As they attempt to catch up with the working Sea Train (the Puffing Tom), they come across a couple obstacles that Zoro manages to cut apart. Including a Marine officer named T-Bone. After that, they run into that frog that likes to play chicken with the trains, Yokozuna. Yokozuna smacks the train away. AWESOME. Luckily, it turns out he’s trained to like Franky, so when Kokoro tells him that Franky’s been kidnapped. Well. Now they’ve got a weirdo super frog on their side, too.
Finally, they meet up with Sanji and Usopp—Sorry. Sogeking (his new identity). Sanji informs them that CP9 is blackmailing Robin into surrendering herself. The team is like “HRM” and then they reach Enies Lobby.
The goal now is to stop the CP9 from taking Robin into the Gate of Justice which is basically the equivalent to doom. Luffy rushes on ahead while everyone else… doesn’t go on ahead. So everyone that isn’t Luffy crash into Enies Lobby and then decide to reunite with Luffy who is… god knows where causing destruction.
Eventually, they all catch up with Luffy on a roof opposite Robin and the members of the CP9. There, they all basically say how they want Robin back and it’s really touching and Robin says she does want to go back and yay everyone’s pumped up BUT HOW WILL THEY GET ACROSS THE LITERAL GIANT GAP BETWEEN THEM? Well, just then the Rocket Man bursts up and they use that as a bridge to get to the other side of the gap where Robin and the CP9 are. Oh also Usopp/Sogeking burns up the flag for the Marines, essentially proclaiming war on them.
Anyway they’re in the building Robin is in except she’s not there anymore because Lucci, the main CP9 guy and the admiral boss guy Whatshisname McJerkface are escorting Robin to that gate thing I forgot the name of. Meanwhile the rest of the CP9 are left behind to fight the Straw Hats. Luffy gets sent on ahead while the rest of the crew stop the remainder of CP9. Also, apparently each member of the CP9 has a key on them somewhere and one of the keys unlocks Robin’s handcuffs. So yeah. They need that key. So the crew split up to get different keys and save time. Zoro gets paired up to fight against Kaku who turns out to be a pretty good swordsman who really likes giraffes. In fact he likes giraffes SO MUCH he has the power to turn INTO a giraffe. Fuck yeah. Except Kakugiraffe is really heavy so when he turns into a giraffe he falls through the ceiling onto Usopp’s fight against a wolfguy. IN A WAY WHICH IS TOO STUPID TO EXPLAIN HERE, Usopp and Zoro get handcuffed together and spend a lot of time running around until Chopper finds the key to THEIR handcuffs. And then Zoro has this really stupid idea to use Usopp as a sword because he’s sick of running.
Oh also. Chopper goes berserk. Also also: there’s this thing called the Buster Call which can destroy islands AND GUESS WHAT THE MARINES JUST PRESSED. Yeah so there’s like this classic action movie time limit now. Ain’t that great?
ANYWHO BACK TO PSYCHO CHOPPER. Franky pops up and comes up with the great idea that the only way to stop him is by shoving him into the ocean since devil fruit users can’t really… survive in water. ANYWAY YEAH. Somehow amongst all that Zoro gets free from Usopp and that’s when the important part starts. Zoro and Kaku fight. Afterwards there’s a brief break where Sanji bursts in as Captain Exposition and is all “THE GATES OF JUSTICE ARE OPENING LUFFY DIDN’T MAKE IT IN TIME” and everyone’s just like “well shit”. Then they send Usopp to go off and stop Robin from being executed while Sanji fights and defeats Usopp’s wolf-guy opponent. So basically Zoro is slow and is the only one not having defeated his opponent. Did that sentence even make sense? Eh, whatever. This is… the most ridiculous fight ever. Especially since most of it involves Zoro getting beaten up by a giraffe’s neck. HOWEVER it is an important fight because Zoro develops this freaky new ultimate move that involves growing… two more heads… and four more arms… Whatever this is One Piece. Anyway this new move is called ASURA/ASHURA (doublecheck) and it pretty much defeats Kaku in one hit. Awesome. So now with Zoro done the Straw Hats have all the keys they need to decide which one frees Robin so they all go to rush where she is. IN THE END THOUGH it’s Usopp that saves her. Well, Franky and Usopp.
Unfortunately, right after they get Robin free, the Buster Call starts to annihilate the island of Enies Lobby. The crew tries to escape by using an underground passage but the passage floods. Luckily (or unluckily) they’re saved by a mermaid… who just so happens to be Kokoro. UNLUCKILY they only get a few minutes of rest before the Marines are on top of them after having successfully demolished like… the majority of Enies Lobby. They hold out until Luffy defeats Lucci and then plan to escape. Too bad Luffy can’t move due to injuries and the Straw Hats have no way to get across to him. LUCKILY THOUGH THEIR OLD SHIP COMES TO SAVE THEM AS IT’S LAST ACT AND IT’S SO TOUCHING. So they all jump into the ocean except Luffy because he rolls there. After that their old ship escorts them to safety through it’s magical faithfulness! And then it dies. But that’s after the Marines stop chasing them.
On a side note: One of Zoro’s swords got destroyed while he was fighting off the marines so yeah. He’s gotta get a new one. ANYWAY. A powerful Marine named Vice Admiral Garp arrives at Water 7 while everyone’s recooperating, and Zoro’s the only one who knows. He rushes to tell Luffy but… gets lost. Like always. Except it’s not really a bad thing because it turns out Garp is Luffy’s grandpa. It’s in this segment that we learn about the “Four Emperors”, aka the four pirates who are ridiculously strong and pretty much rule over the latter half of the Grand Line. Those Four Emperors are Red-Haired Shanks, Whitebeard, and some blacked out silhouettes.
Anyway after that explanation Zoro comes running in (he found two guys to lead him there) and Garp sends his two Petty Officers to fight both him and Luffy. Both officers are beaten easily, but when they stand up they reveal themselves to be Coby and… Helmeppo. As in those two guys from one of the first One Piece stories. Anyway they chill for a bit then go away and more random stuff happens and them Franky builds them a new, bigger ship. But before they go and see it they get to see their new bounties! Zoro’s is now 120,000,000 beri. Because he’s badass. Fuck yeah. Also Franky gets a bounty so he can’t stay on Water 7 so his family asks for the Straw Hats to take him. Franky himself is reluctant, but the Strawhats steal his pants so he… joins them. Which is good because the pirates have the Marines chasing after them again (Garp came back).
Then there’s a flashback of Zoro being a hardass about Usopp coming back to the ship without apologizing because it would disgrace Luffy’s dignity as a captain. Which… actually makes a lot of sense. Anyway Garp is attacking them while they leave without Usopp who is now chasing after them. They continue to ignore him until he apologizes, in which Luffy throws his hand out and drags him onto the ship AND EVERYTHING IS GOOD AGAIN. Oh and the new ship’s name is Thousand Sunny.
So after that shit happens, the crew’s bounties get amped up and they sail off. Into One Piece’s version of the Bermuda Triangle (called the Florian Triangle) where they come across a spooky old ship with a skeleton with an afro on it. Luffy meets the skeleton who says his name is Brook and Luffy immediately invites him to join the crew. Brook accepts and yeah. They have…a new member. Well, they would if they could get his shadow back from the guy who stole it. See, without his shadow, Brook can’t go out into the light otherwise he’ll burn up and disappear. So Luffy promises to fight the guy that stole his shadow and bring it back. Unfortunately, they don’t have a choice in the matter since their ship is led to the island where the shadow-stealing jerk is waiting for them. The island itself is called “Thriller Bark” and is considered to be a “ghost island”. Nami, Usopp and Chopper go ahead on their own and then disappear so the rest of the crew goes after them. They walk through a forest full of hybrid animals until they run across this ghost that says ‘negative’ over and over. If the ghost flies through you, you feel extremely negative about yourself. The ghost flies through Franky, Luffy, and Zoro. Eventually it flies out and they continue to fight zombies and discover who’s behind all this shadow-napping. Turns out it’s a guy named Moria who is a Shichibukai (like Crocodile). The Straw Hats continue on and into a spooky mansion where first Sanji, then Zoro disappears. Later on, Luffy disappears too.
Turns out Luffy, Sanji and Zoro had their shadows taken, Luffy’s was even fed to this giant demon thing that could start up another DOOM scenario. The rest of the crew finds Zoro, Luffy and Sanji’s bodies back on the ship and wake them all up. Enraged, the crew then goes out again to go beat up Moria for taking their shadows and shit. Luckily! The crew knows the weakness of the zombies that inhabit the island now, and since their shadows are attached to zombies or something, all they need to do is throw salt in their mouths. Also Franky and Robin ran into Brook on the island and Brook basically told them he’s the ship that Laboon THAT ADORABLE WHALE was waiting for. After Luffy hears that (and the fact that he’s also a musician) Luffy is determined to make him his crewmate. So Zoro steps off the boat (first one!) to go get back his, Luffy’s, Sanji’s and Brook’s shadows. So again the team splits up. Zoro goes with Franky to go meet up with Brook and help him get his shadow back. Luffy goes to defeat Moria and everyone else goes after the Zombie General Absalom who kidnapped Nami to make her his bride.
Unfortunately for Franky and Zoro their way is blocked by the giant monster thing that Luffy’s shadow was fed to. So yeah. They’re stuck. Until giant Luffy monster walks away and Franky makes a bridge for them. Continuing on, they run into Perona, the girl who controls the negative ghosts. Usopp stops and fights her and the others push on. Franky and Zoro continue on until they finally meet up with Brook just as he gets beaten by his shadow, who happens to be a famous samurai that chopped down a dragon. Zoro gets excited and challenges the guy, saying that he’ll steal the guy’s blade and use it. When the battle starts, it seems as if the two of them are easily matched. Except Zoro’s better. Just a bit. Anyway Zoro manages to slice him up and kill him, freeing Brook’s shadow and giving it back to him. The Samurai-zombie also gives his sword to Zoro so now Zoro has three swords again. A few minutes later Luffy’s shadow-zombie heads towards the building where Zoro, Brook and Franky are. The rest of the strawhats are in the surrounding areas and the Luffy Giant (named Oz) proceeds to pretty much take each one of them out. Including Zoro.
Of course it doesn’t take long for them to all get back up. Together, they manage to knock Oz down, which is quite a feat since he’s… gigantic. When he’s on the ground, the six Strawhats (Zoro, Sanji, Robin, Franky, Chopper and Usopp) all beat him up. Zoro comes up with a plan to kill Oz (aka slashing a lot) because out of the three who had their shadows taken (himself, Luffy and Sanji) Luffy’s shadow is the most powerful and most important to get back. Unfortunately, Moria hops into a command center inside of Oz and pretty much becomes Oz’s brains which… narrows their chances of winning by a ton. Moria tells them that they’ll be able to fight him so long as they defeat Oz first, so Zoro instructs Usopp to get some salt to purify Luffy’s shadow from Oz’s body. Moria hears this and instructs Oz to smush Usopp, but luckily Usopp is saved by Brook who comes bearing a huge ass bag of salt. Brook and Franky work together to try and hurt Oz, but both end up getting defeated. Things get worse though when the pirates discover that Oz has Luffy’s stretching powers, making him a lot more powerful than he already was. This is mostly due to the fact that Moria’s inside of him, since whatever Moria does to Oz’s shadow happens to Oz. So if Oz’s shadow’s arm stretched, then Oz’s arm would stretch. Robin tries to stop him from doing this but only manages to get her shadow taken as well. A few minutes later and Sanji and Chopper are taken out as well while attempting to detach one of Oz’s arms from his body. With hardly any choices left, Zoro sacrifices himself to make an opening for Usopp to get the salt into Oz’s mouth. The distraction works, but Usopp’s salt never reaches Oz’s mouth because of Moria’s shadow who manages to catch it and then throw it back at Usopp, spilling all of it. At this point, Zoro is already K.O’d.
And then Luffy comes and with a lot of injuries and hard work he manages to defeat both Moria and almost Oz. While the fight’s actually happening, the island’s local Zombie’s Who Want Their Shadows Back army come and take Zoro and the other defeated crew members somewhere safer for them to rest. Zoro rejects their help and somehow, despite being knee’d into a wall by Oz himself, gets up and is ready to fight. At this point Luffy is asleep or knocked out or whatever after his own battle with Oz and Moria, so in order to protect his captain Zoro goes up with Nami and Usopp to protect him against Oz. Then the rest of the crew wakes up, as does Luffy and together they all launch an attack on Oz. And it’s with that attack that Oz goes down. AND MORIA GETS BACK UP. LIKE A DICK. And it’s almost dawn, too, which means that Zoro, Robin, Luffy and Sanji will all disappear if their shadows haven’t returned by then. To make matters worse, Moria steals the shadows from all of his zombies on the island and grows into a superpowerful superbig Moria. Luffy keeps fighting him though, even as the sun rises, forcing the shadows out from him until there are no more shadows left. Fortunately, Sanji, Robin and Zoro and Luffy’s shadows are returned at just the right time and everyone is safe! Except Luffy is knocked out due to exhaustion.
So everything seems to be good until a super-powerful shichibukai. One even more powerful than Moria. This new shichibukai is named Bartholomew Kuma and he’s given the task by the marines to annihilate everyone who witnessed Moria’s defeat. Sadly, Zoro is his first target out of anyone, and Zoro-like the stubborn idiot he is-doesn’t let anyone back him up. Sadly, Kuma’s power is to pretty much repel anything, so all of Zoro’s attacks get repelled and anyone else who tries to intervene is badly injured. The fight goes on for a few minutes until Kuma decides to give them a choice. He makes a bomb and tells everyone here that he will let them live if they give Luffy over to him. Of course everyone refuses and the bomb goes off, engulfing the entire island and exploding.
With everyone knocked out, Kuma goes straight for Luffy. He’s stopped by Zoro who is somehow still alive after all the shit he’s gone through. He attacks Kuma, wounding him thanks to the element of surprise. The injury reveals that Kuma himself is a cyborg. Not that that really matters right now. What really matters is that Zoro realizes that Kuma is hellbent on taking Luffy’s head and gives him another offer. Instead of taking Luffy’s head, he tells Kuma to take his own. So basically, Zoro’s sacrificing himself for Luffy. Kuma agrees, and goes even further to promise that he will not harm Luffy after Zoro is presumably dead. In return for that promise, Zoro has to endure all the pain that Luffy went through during their stay on Thriller Bark. Which is essentially adding Luffy’s pain and fatigue on top of his own, but on the plus side this means that Luffy is comepletely rested and healed since all of his injuries would be transferred over to Zoro. Zoro doesn’t even think before accepting the agreement and the next time we see him is pretty much on the verge of dying. No one in the crew knows what happened to him, as they were all asleep. Only Sanji really knows since he woke up and tried to stop Zoro while it was happening but Zoro knocked him out.
ANYWAY. After Sanji finds Zoro, he takes him back to the other crew where Chopper immediately starts to work on healing him. Also after this Brook joins the Strawhats. Before the Strawhats leave Thriller Bark they receive an item called the Vivre Card, which, when split up, informs the holders of the different pieces of the other holders of the cards.
Anyway they set out and on the way to the next island the crew runs into a mermaid and her pet… starfish thing. Her name is Caimie and her starfish boss thing is named Pappagg. Caimie’s other boss, Hachi (that octopus starfish that Zoro beat up at Arlong Park), is kidnapped by a gang called the Flying Fish Riders before being led to the Shabondy Archipelago. The strawhats go with her to help rescue him and in return Caimie will show them the way to Fishman island. So the Strawhats manage to beat up the Flying Fish Riders and their leader who is a spitting image of Sanji’s wanted poster. They save Hachi from them and everything’s chill. So then they head off to the Shabondy Archipelago to get their ship “coated”, which means “put it in a bubble-thing so it can go underwater”. Anyway, Zoro goes off on his own to explore the archipelago and picks a fight with a Tenryuubuto (a Noble person) which is a big NO-NO since doing that can get a marine admiral on your ass. The Tenryuubuto are pretty much lawless guys who can do whatever they want. But Zoro doesn’t know that, tries to pick a fight, and is stopped by this other high-bounty pirate captain. Other high-bounty pirates are around and they all go ‘oohlalahe’scrazy/good/etc.” Then he takes this guy who got shot by the Tenryuubuto and heads to the nearest hospital. Meanwhile Caimie gets kidnapped by slavers and it’s up to the other Strawhats who know where they’re going to get her back. Unfortunately, the Strawhats find out that she’s being shown at an auction with both high bounty pirates and Tenryuubuto attending. The one that Zoro picked a fight with is there and buys Caimie for 5 million beri right before Zoro and Luffy and Hachi burst into the hall. Luffy goes down to rescue Caimie, but Hachi gets shot by that Tenryuubuto guy and Luffy gets pissed and punches him in the face. So yeah. That means the marines are coming. With battleships. And armies.
But the Strawhats don’t care about that. All they care about is getting Caimie free. So Zoro cuts her free from her giant fish tank and then they meet Rayleigh, who was part of Roger’s pirate crew (he was the first mate) but now is a ship mechanic who “coats” ships. He pretty much knocks out/kills all the Tenryuubuto there and is all “SUP LUFFY NICE TO FINALLY SEE YOU”. Rayleigh then frees Caimie of her chains and collar. He takes Hachi and tells the Strawhats to meet up with him at another part of the archipelago. Luffy and the rest agree and then go out and kick the asses of all the marines that are now surrounding the building. Anyway, the Strawhats blast through them and get to Rayleigh’s place in order to discuss Coating and heal Hachi.
While they’re talking one of the Marine Admirals lands on the island. His name is Kizaru and he has the power of light so he can do lots of powerful shit and stuff. The Strawhats figure that there is an admiral already on the island and decide to split up and go back to the ship. Before they go, Rayleigh’s assistant-person gives them all a piece of the same Vivre Card, so that they know is someone’s dead or not. Unfortunately, before they even have a chance to split up they run into Bartholomew Kuma again. Well, one of Kuma’s duplicates. And they manage to beat it, too. But then hops down another Kuma along with another high-powered Marine named Sentoumaru. The crew realizes they won’t be able to survive another standoff so they split for realizes this time. Zoro gets paired up with Brook (who apparently witnessed the whole Thiller Bark thing) and Usopp. Unfortunately, they don’t make it too far until Zoro is knocked back by Kizaru. Robin tries to save him from Kizaru’s second, point-blank shot but he steps on Zoro and yeah. Things suck. But then Rayleigh saves him! YAY RAYLEIGH! So while Rayleigh stalls Kizaru, Usopp and Brook take Zoro and run. Unfortunately the Marines have at this point realized that Zoro is incredibly weak right now (still recuperating from his Thriller Bark injuries) and target him first. So yeah, fake Kuma #2 goes after Zoro but is stopped by Real!Kuma who is all “SO WE MEET AGAIN RORONOA” and then blasts him but actually just teleported Zoro to an island called Kuraigana, in the ruins of some kingdom there. As for the rest of the crew: they’re scattered throughout the One Piece World as well. But Zoro’s the most important here. Anyway, in this ruined kingdom he runs into Perona, that negative ghost girl from Thriller Bark. He walks around Kuraigana, eventually running into and beating a feral baboon called Humandrill, who learned how to swordfight from watching soldiers in a war. After beating him, he runs into Mihawk who tells him that Luffy is fighting at Marineford which is the main headquarters of the Marines. Mihawk offers Zoro a small boat so that he can get to Luffy and Zoro heads there, having to fight through more of those feral baboon-things to get there. Unfortunately, the baboons destroy the ship but Zoro doesn’t care because he’s badass. He’ll use the wrecked ship to help him swim to where Luffy is. Fuck yeah. Mihawk’s just like “lol u mad craycray”.
When there’s news in the newspaper that Luffy has rung this big Marine bell, Zoro reads it and deciphers a message from Luffy in it. The message says “meet up in Shabondy Archipalego in 2 years”. So, Zoro spends the remaining time training under Mihawk.
FAST FORWARD TWO YEARS AND BAM LOOK IT’S ALMOST THE END OF THIS SECTION. With Perona’s help, Zoro returns to the archipelago and is the first one there! Unfortunately he gets lost and goes on the wrong boat, so Sanji finds him and drags him to the right boat. The reunited crew then sets off. Oh, and Zoro wears new clothes and is a lot better than he was before and has a scar over his left eye.
The crew then set off to Fishman Island and wind up beating up a kraken on the way there, and Zoro, Sanji and Luffy get lost deep under the sea with all these crayzay fishies. And that’s the point I’m taking him from. Awesome. |
